Refuge

2018

Dance as a refuge from daily life opening up to new trajectories establishing a different relationship to the world, to oneself. Here are two men -warehouse workers- who are creating a space amidst cardboard boxes of a sorting platform, and who by listening to their own amplified breath and voice will be able to discover unprecedented movements in order to break free from their working habits. They are alone but a rumour reaches them and encourages them to persist with their course.
Breath and movement connection has been questioned in my work since 2005 and in the solo Hauts Cris (miniature). It defines the body as an adjustable breathing and sound instrument playing simultaneously to the movement.
In Refuge, the two dancers are slowly creating a score for musical bodies associated with their repetitive actions, in order to break out from the chain work. The sound filtering will enable it to have an effect on movement perception, consistency and energy as if the body were overflowing its own edges. It is not only the surrounding space which will elicit body movement but also the sound which will create space for movement.

Refuge was created on June 15th 2018 at Le Vivat, scène conventionnée of Armentières in the frame of the Latitudes Contemporaines festival.
